BARCELONA MYTHOLOGICAL

Discover the most classic Barcelona!

MONTJUÏC

Montjuïc has been witness and protagonist of key events that have given its current character. First was the 1929 International Exhibition held in Barcelona that drove the development of the area. More recently, the 1992 Olympic Games meant a major renovation. Furthermore, the mountain is an excellent vantage point to see the city is full of tourist attractions such as major museums and the Olympic ring or difrentes parks and gardens. Unquestionably, Montjuïc is one of the green lungs of the city and getting lost in these wonderful places will grant you one of the best moments during your stay.

FOUNTAIN OF THE PLAÇA ESPANYA

The Plaça de Espanya is the gateway to all the mountain of Montjuïc and a huge communication knot. This space was designed in 1929 in motive of the Universal Exposition around the monumental fountain.

As it could not be in another way, the fountain is full of symbolism. The sculptures of the three main niches represent the three seas that bathe the coasts of the Iberian peninsula: the Mediterranean, the Atlantic and the Cantabrian.

Furthermore, all the statues that surround it have a meaning that viewing the attributes that accompany them you will surely guess what they are. The fountain is crowned by a censer and of some fame statues that announce your arrival.

How to get there?

  • Getting there by public transport is a very good option. Lines 1 and 3 of the metro have a stop there, as well as buses 13, 46 and 150.

  • The private car is not a bad option. Note that in this area there is always more parking.

  • But as I say walking or cycling will never be a problem.

FOUNTAIN OF CERES

You can not imagine the history of this fountain. So many experiences, so many times and so many emotions that Ceres eyes were able to capture. The fountain is located in the mountain of Montjuïc, halfway between the National Palace and the Olympic Ring.

The statue of Ceres, goddess of agriculture, stands on the top of a towering pedestal flanked by fishes with an aggressive look. The group forms one of the most special roundabouts of the city.

How to get there?

  • In this area, public transport is scarce. Buses 23 and 150 stop there.

  • The car is not a bad option just like approach it on foot.

  • Because of the slope, the bicycle is perhaps not the best way to go.

STATUE OF MINERVA

How to get there?

From my point of view, this statue is the most impressive one in the route. It is located in a niche in front of the Cartographic Institute of Catalonia and is truly stunning.

Made of white marble it reminds the ancient Roman statues and just to be Minerva will awesome you. Surprise its size and its position with his head raised and his helmet so characteristic.

  • It is only reachable on foot or by bicycle, but since when this is a problem?

MUSEU D'ARQUEOLOGIA DE CATALUNYA

It is always good to visit a museum, but more if it is a museum like this. The Archaeology Museum of Catalonia contains a permanent exhibition of Greek and Roman art, as well as other times. If you have the opportunity to get in don't let it scape because you will really get surprised.

It is a few steps from the statue of Minerva and the museum can be found near the Ciutat del Teatre with plenty of cultural offers.

How to get there?

  • It is ten minutes walk from the Plaça Espanya and the path will not disappoint.

  • A 55 bus stop is relatively close.

FOUNTAIN OF BACCHUS

This is perhaps the "monument" more hidden and more difficult to find throughout the route. When you have found you can proclaimed yourselves official serchers of mythological elements.

The fountain is quite austere and it is only decorated with a bas-relief of the god Bacchus. It is located in an exceptional garden behind the Cartographic Institute.

Do not forget to visit the whole garden and look also a bronze statue called Marinada.

How to get there?

  • The only option is to get there on foot or by bicycle.

  • Bus 55 stops nearby and there is quite to park to approach to it by car.

TEATRE GREC

And finally, a monument that will not let you unsatisfied: the Grec Theatre. Inspired by the famous theater of Epidaurus, the Grec of Barcelona is one of the best veneration of the classical culture.

It was built in motive of the Universal Exhibition of 1929 and is surrounded by glorious gardens. If you draw near during the summer months you can enjoy the shows that take place.

How to get there?

  • The 55 bus will drop you at the entrance of the gardens and the theater.

  • If you go on foot you couldwalk for a stroll on the wonderful gardens of Laribal and it also has parking around.
